Professor McElvaine’s book Eve’s Seed: Biology, the Sexes and the Course of History reinterprets the human experience from evolution to the present, arguing that misperceptions of differences between the sexes have been the major motive force in history. His ideas were featured in an article in the Arts & Ideas section of the New York Times. The book has received glowing comments from both general readers and academics. A Few examples:
“As Marx turned Hegel upside down, so McElvaine overturns, among others, Aristotle, Marx, Freud, and even Darwin in showing us how biological and cultural evolution need no longer see men and women as opposites or unequal. Eve’s Seed is a revelation, engagingly and imaginatively written and . . . filled with fresh and challenging interpretations.”
– Pulitzer Prize-winning Stanford historian Carl Degler
“I find the book Eve’s Seed intriguing. It signals a significant paradigm shift.”
– Feminist pioneer Betty Friedan
“Eve’s Seed is a truly remarkable book, probably the most thought-provoking book I’ve read in years. . . . a marvelous book.”
– Rabbi Harold S. Kushner

He has lectured to enthusiastic audiences around the United States and in Russia, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and India on his ideas about the central influence on human history of various misconceptions and metaphors about sex that form the basis of Eve’s Seed, and a Chinese edition of the book has been published.
